Introduction
All children require assistance and
support in order to succeed in school. The New
York City public school system's special
education program is required to provide customized instruction catering to
the particular needs of students with disabilities.
A federal law called the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is designed to ensure that
all children with disabilities are provided with free and appropriate public education
through special education programs and services. The IDEA and New
York State and
City education law combine to offer a variety of special education services
and programs designed to meet a child's unique needs. Your
child may have a right to these services.
