Nature of Claims: We are representing a client who is being prosecuted for failure to register as a sex offender based on a 1984 conviction in California. We are arguing that registration is not required because the client’s California sentence was completed before New York’s SORA was enacted, and also because California law did not require the client to register at the time of his conviction.
