The Legal Aid Society mourns and stands in solidarity with all those affected by the tragedy in Orlando
MONDAY, JUNE 13, 2016

As we take time this month to affirm our support for and celebrate the diversity of our lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and gender non-conforming (LGBTGNC) staff, clients, and community partners, let us also reflect on the oppression faced by these communities.

This year we have seen the largest number of anti-LGBTGNC bills introduced in our country. Studies show that LGBTGNC people, especially people of color, are living at some of the highest poverty rates and are among the most criminalized in our country. It is the mission of the Society that no New Yorker should be denied access to justice because of poverty and as part of our mission, we zealously believe there is no justice without equality. We are proud of our commitment to increase our cultural humility as it relates to sexual orientation and gender identity and, as such, we are committed in all ways possible to fight to eliminate the many disparities experienced by the LGBTGNC communities.
