Statement on the Right To Know Act
MONDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 2017

Tina Luongo, Attorney-In-Charge of the Criminal Defense Practice at The Legal Aid Society, released the following statement today regarding the Right To Know Act.

“With the deadline approaching for the City Council to pass the Right To Know Act this session, we want to reaffirm our full support for the legislation and again urge the sponsors to secure immediate passage of strong, coalition-supported Right to Know Act bills. Countless New Yorkers from communities of color suffer unlawful and abusive stops and searches by the NYPD every day without knowing who the involved officers are, why they are being stopped, or that they have the right to refuse a search when the only justification is the person’s consent. This legislation will help correct that. This is not a controversial issue, it’s a guarantee that people know full well their rights and options when coming in contact with law enforcement. It’s time for both sides of City Hall to coalesce around these common sense reforms by passing the Right to Know Act into law.”
