Statement On Low-Level Warrant Clearing In The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens And Brooklyn

Tina Luongo, Attorney-In-Charge of the Criminal Practice at The Legal Aid Society, released the below statement today responding to motions filed today by the District Attorneys in the Bronx, Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn to clear 750,000 arrest warrants for minor offenses.

“Today is a fresh start for thousands of New Yorkers. These warrants are a result of overzealous, broken windows policing that disproportionately impacts communities of color. They can hold disastrous and punitive consequences restricting access to public housing, student loans and other public programs. This clearing is long overdue and we encourage the Staten Island District Attorney to do right by his constituents and afford them the same justice.”
