Statement on Governor Cuomo’s Veto of Gravity Knife Reform

Tina Luongo, Attorney-In-Charge of the Criminal Practice at The Legal Aid Society, released the following statement following New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo’s veto of gravity knife reform.

“For decades, black and brown New Yorkers have been arrested, prosecuted and incarcerated for possessing a basic work knife sold at retail stores across the state. Albany had a second chance to right this injustice tonight but failed to enact needed reform.

We will continue our efforts next session to correct this poorly written, antiquated and discriminatory statute, and remain committed to defending individuals ensnared in the criminal justice system for gravity knife possession. The Legal Aid Society thanks bill sponsors Senator Diane Savino and Assembly Member Dan Quart for their tireless advocacy advancing reform.”
