Statement on City Council Bedford Union Armory Hearing

Judith Goldiner, Attorney-In-Charge of the Civil Law Reform Unit at The Legal Aid Society, released the following statement today responding to the City Council’s hearing on the Bedford Armory land use application.

“From the start, this project has been flawed and offers little relief for the residents of a neighborhood that’s suffering from gentrification and skyrocketing rents.

We hope through this oversight process that the City Council sees this project for what it really is: a giveaway to real estate and one that could set a dangerous land use precedent.

Land that is fully owned by the public should serve an exclusive public purpose. Until the Bedford Union Armory development plan reflects that, we will continue to oppose it on behalf of our clients and other low-income New Yorkers who are in desperate need of affordable and permanent housing.”
