Statement in Support of Council Resolution Urging Governor Cuomo to Sign Gravity Knife Reform
WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2017

Tina Luongo, Attorney-In-Charge of the Criminal Practice at The Legal Aid Society released the following statement today following the introduction of a City Council Resolution calling on New York State Governor to support gravity knife reform legislation.

“New York’s gravity knife statute is outmoded and overly broad allowing the police and district attorney offices to arrest and prosecute New Yorkers for carrying simple work knives.

For the second straight year, the Legislature has near unanimously passed reform and Governor Cuomo has a rare second chance to right last year’s ill-advised veto when the bill makes it to his desk.

The Legal Aid Society lauds Council Member Vanessa Gibson for introducing this legislation and we urge the Council to consider this resolution in committee immediately.”
