Statement from The Legal Aid Society on NYIFUP Funding
TUESDAY, JUNE 06, 2017

The Legal Aid Society released the following statement today responding to the City Council’s announcement on funding for the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project.

“Since 2013, NYIFUP has defended detained immigrants without restriction as a force to battle against rampant detention and deportation. NYIFUP ensures that families remain together and that everyone is afforded due process under the law.

NYIFUP’s success is due in large part to the fact that we provide unrestricted representation to all that seek a fair shot. These are the ideals of Gideon v. Wainwright – no one, regardless of poverty, should ever be denied an attorney.

With today’s announcement, the City Council, under the leadership of Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, reaffirms their support of those sacred ideals and commitment towards protecting some of New York’s most vulnerable and marginalized. These are New York values and what it truly means to be a sanctuary.”
