Statement From The Legal Aid Society on NYIFUP Budget Agreement

Adriene Holder, Attorney-In-Charge of the Civil Practice at The Legal Aid Society, issued the following statement today re: the New York Immigrant Family Unity Project (NYIFUP).

“We are grateful for Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito and the City Council’s unwavering advocacy to secure an agreement with the City that will preserve NYIFUP’s model with the addition of private funding. As we’ve always maintained, NYIFUP’s success as a right to counsel program is rooted in unrestricted access.

Now that the issue of a criminal carve out has been resolved, we look forward to strengthening our efforts defending New Yorkers from unjust detention and deportation.”
