Judith Goldiner, Attorney-In-Charge of the Law Reform Unit at The Legal Aid Society, released the following statement on the City Council Public Housing’s hearing examining the Department of Investigation’s report on NYCHA’s permanent exclusion policy.

“DOI’s recommendations are unthinking and dangerous, and could lead to unwarranted and systemized evictions at NYCHA developments across the city.

Permanent exclusion drives homelessness, breaks up families and subjects residents to invasive random inspections – creating a mindset that they’re second class citizens.

Given City Hall’s failure to control rife homelessness, it’s completely baffling that an agency would propose polices that put more New Yorkers out of a home. Our clients expect NYCHA to make the right decision here and reject the report’s findings.”
