Statement from The Legal Aid Society on DOI’s Report and Recommendations Concerning Permanent Exclusion Policies at NYCHA Developments

The Legal Aid Society issued the following statement today responding to the New York City Department of Investigation’s findings and recommendations for the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) on its permanent exclusion policy.

“This report’s methodology and recommendations raise more questions than they answer, and the city should reject these findings outright.

DOI’s proposals would ultimately lead to the reinstating of discriminatory policing practices that have historical plagued NYCHA residents and communities of color. Moreover, DOI failed to consult residents or other stakeholders while conducting this research. This brash lack of inclusivity is dangerous – especially when dealing with some of the city’s most vulnerable - and as such, lend this report zero merit.”
