Statement from The Legal Aid Society on Luongo v. NYPD Decision
FRIDAY, JUNE 02, 2017

The Legal Aid Society released the following statement today responding to Judge Joan Lobis’ decision in Luongo v. NYPD. Legal Aid and Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP brought this lawsuit in December, 2016, demanding that the NYPD release its administrative summaries of officer disciplinary outcomes, which previous administrations have made public for the past four decades.

“While we are disappointed with today’s ruling, we maintain that the City's current interpretation of 50-a is overly broad and inconsistent with over 40 years of practice. As such, we are considering all future options including appeal. As long as issues of police brutality continue to plague communities of color, New Yorkers need to know that the NYPD is taking the necessary steps to hold officers accountable and to change long-standing Department culture.”
