Rally for Stronger Rent Laws

Yesterday, The Alliance for Tenant Power, had a rally for stronger rent laws in Queens. ATP is made up of The Legal Aid Society, The Community Service Society, Make the Road NY, New York Communities for Change and Tenants & Neighbors In June 2015, the rent laws expire. ATP is working to strengthen the laws to ensure that rent stabilized housing remains affordable to our clients and our communities.

In the last 20 years we have lost 100,000 rent stabilized units to deregulation. At the same time because of loopholes in the rent laws, more and more stabilized units have become unaffordable. At the rally, Tom Waters from CSS reported that in Queens, low income tenants pay about 49 percent of their income toward rent. Many tenants talked about the struggle to keep themselves housed as rent has become less affordable. The rally was mentioned in two articles, one in the Daily News, and one in El Diario.
