Public Defense Day - The Promise of Gideon

Friday is the anniversary of Gideon V Wainwright’s creation of the constitutional right to counsel. Public defender offices across the country will be celebrating the first ever Public Defense Day.

The mission of Public Defense Day is to bring attention to the work we do on behalf of our clients and the issues our clients face every day. Since the Gideon decision in 1963, The Legal Aid Society has represented more than 5 million New Yorkers who were caught up in the criminal justice system. Seymour W. James, the Attorney-in-Chief, will be addressing the entire staff of The Legal Aid Society via video conferencing, thanking them for the tremendous work they do.
