Preventive Measures Increase in Response to Child Deaths
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 2006

Kim McLaurin, Attorney-in-Charge of the Queens County Juvenile Rights Office, pointed out in a New York Times article that there has been an increase in preventive measures since the highly publicized parental abuse and beating death of Nixzmary Brown in January, 2006. Before the Nixzmary Brown tragedy, child services and school authorities focused on the abuse case and did not look at other children in a family. Now those same authorities check to determine if the children are going to school and look at the broader picture as a preventive measure to child abuse and neglect. Members of the Juvenile Rights staff have seen a significant increase in abuse and neglect cases since the Nixzmary Brown tragedy.
