MONDAY, APRIL 03, 2017

Tina Luongo, Attorney-in-Charge of the Criminal Practice, announced the appointment of Peter Mitchell as Director of Training for the Criminal Practice.

"Peter began his public defender career in our Manhattan Office in 1997. In 2012 after 15 years of honing his litigation and advocacy skills, he moved to the training unit to assist Dennis with the restructuring of new attorney training program and an expansion of the training platform. Since that time, Peter has been the lead trainer for the past six new attorney training classes, comprising over 250 new attorneys.

"In addition to new attorney training, he has coordinated the development of trainings for more experienced attorneys, paralegals and investigators, including the new program in suppression litigation and a new version of the yearly Trial Advocacy Program (TAP). He has also co-authored (with John Schoeffel) many of the current LAS practice treatises, among them the new volumes on Hearsay, Suppression Hearings, and Accusatory Instruments. Peter has had extensive training experience outside of Legal Aid Society, particularly in developing Spanish-language trainings for attorneys in Latin America. He has conducted over 30 trainings for the American Bar Association's Rule of Law Initiative in Ecuador, Panama and Mexico, including a new program on defense investigations and new programs on evidence. He has worked for over 10 years with Proyecto Acceso, a San Diego-based organization which promotes legal reform in Mexico and has lectured at universities in Peru and Mexico, including at UNAM, the largest university in Latin America. Additionally, Peter has been a trainer for NITA, a regular speaker for the New York State Defender Association and the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, and a presenter at the Gideon's Promise Trainer Development Conference in Atlanta.

"Our Training Unit is leading the way here in NYS and across the country in creating cutting edge programs that keep pace with the ever changing landscape in our profession. We look forward to the future with our expanded number of staff and a new Director. Dennis would be very proud!

"Congratulations Peter!"
