New Set of Attorney Conduct Rules

The Appellate Division has issued a new set of attorney conduct rules for New York, effective April 1, 2009. The new rules generally track the ABA Model Rules format. A summary of some of the more significant changes appears in a press release issued today by Judge Kaye and the Presiding Justices of the Appellate Division. An article from today's New York Law Journal describing the changes appears here. New Rule 6.1 exhorts that every lawyer should "aspire" to provide at least 20 hours of pro bono legal services each year to poor persons, and to contribute financially to organizations that provide legal services to poor persons. A Practice Advisory will follow.
