Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman announced a new program today to provide civil legal assistance to the hundreds of thousands of low-income New Yorkers who are desperately in need of representation during this economic downturn. Steven Banks, the Attorney-in-Chief of The Legal Aid Society, called the new initiative a breakthrough in efforts to draw more volunteer lawyers. “It is an innovative idea to tap into untapped resources,” Banks told The New York Times.
