TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2006

The Appellate Division First Department held on September 19, 2006, that rent-stabilized landlords are required to continue acception federal "Section 8" rent subsidies with respect to rent-stablized tenants and are not permitted to opt out of this federal subsidy program. Judith Goldiner, a staff attorney in the Law Reform Unit, who handed the case, said that the decision is a victory for affordable housing in New York City because it menas that 60,000 households who would otherwise have lost their apartments and might become homeless now will remain in their affordable housing.
