Legal Aid Welcomes Legislation To Prevent Future Harm To Our Immigrant Community
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 07, 2014

The Legal Aid Society applauds City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, Council Member Carlos Menchaca, Council Member Daniel Dromm and the Mayor for taking such a meaningful first step towards protecting New Yorkers from disparate treatment during the criminal justice process based on immigration status.

This summer, Legal Aid Society staff attorneys all over the city fought against ICE detainers to secure the release of hardworking New York residents, many of them here with their families. ICE detainers were the only reason these people were taken to Rikers Island. ICE detainers, unchallenged, would have been the only reason they were kept in custody beyond the termination of criminal proceedings. We welcome this legislation and urge its expeditious passing to prevent future harm to our immigrant community.
