The Legal Aid Society of New York, the Association of Legal Aid Attorneys and the Service Employees International Union 1199 marched in New York City on Saturday to demand the closing of Rikers Island. More than 1,500 people marched through the Astoria section of Queens to the entrance of the jail complex, where a rally was held.

The Legal Aid Society is among dozens of organizations calling for the close of Rikers Island, which has been the target of criticism for harsh conditions and violence. Among the marchers was Tina Luongo, left foreground, the attorney-in-charge of Legal Aid's Criminal Practice.
