Janet Sabel Appointed Executive Deputy Attorney General for Social Justice
WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 22, 2010

Attorney General-elect Eric Schneiderman has announced the appointment of Janet Sabel as the Executive Deputy Attorney General for Social Justice. We will certainly miss Janet's many contributions to the Society in her current position as the Society's General Counsel and Chief Administrative Officer and in all the other positions she has held at the Society over the past 25 years. However, in her new position at the Attorney General's office she will have a major role in a number of areas with great impact in our clients' lives. Her areas of responsibility will include civil rights, environmental protection, labor, health, charities, and tobacco.

Janet began her Legal Aid career as a summer law intern at the Civil Practice's Harlem Office and has held a series of positions at the Society since 1985, including: staff attorney in the Park Place Office serving Brooklyn; staff attorney in the Civil Law Reform Unit; attorney-in-charge of the Civil Lower Manhattan Office; attorney-in-charge of the Civil Health Law Unit; and attorney-in-charge of the Civil Immigration Law Unit. In these various positions, she litigated a number of major law reform cases, particularly in the health law area. She was also a leader of the Society's disaster relief legal assistance program following September 11. Over the past five years in her current position, she has had responsibility for managing a broad range of areas, including legal ethics and professional responsibility, all legal and contractual matters for the Society, the improvement of the Society's facilities, and the current case management system upgrade. She is a past Marden Award winner and has been recognized by a number of organizations for the excellence of her legal work. We are very grateful for all that Janet has done on behalf of the Society and our clients and we wish her well in her new position.

Her appointment will be effective in January. Within the next week, we will be posting a job announcement seeking applicants to handle the major responsibilities of her position. As soon as we have the exact date for this transition we will inform you. In the meantime, you can continue to follow up with Janet on any matter that you otherwise would.
