Free the innocent

Manhattan: Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams is right to call for an independent overseer to investigate the slew of wrongful convictions emerging from the Joe Hynes-Louis Scarcella era. But also kudos to the Brooklyn district attorney and that office’s Conviction Integrity Unit for their efforts to identify and correct these erroneous convictions that have destroyed lives and upended communities. In addition to Brooklyn, dedicated conviction integrity initiatives exist at DA’s offices in the Bronx, Manhattan and, more recently, Staten Island. Queens DA Richard Brown is the only city prosecutor who does not have a sovereign department dedicated to reviewing these injustices. It’s high time for DA Brown to give up his old-fashioned approach and recognize the need for a dedicated initiative.
