Dramatic Increase in Child Abuse and Neglect
FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 2007

Tamara A. Steckler, Attorney-in-Charge of the Juvenile Rights practice at Legal Aid, testified before the New York City Council that the surge in reports of child abuse and neglect since the tragic death of Nixzmary Brown has overwhelmed the juvenile justice system. Ms. Steckler said that the number of cases handled by attorneys under her direction has increased substantially. Some of the most seasoned attorneys have close to 400 children at a time when the national standard is 100 clients per lawyer.
