Directors Elected, Staff Honored at 137th Annual Meeting

Nineteen Directors were elected or re-elected to the Board of Directors of The Legal Aid Society at its 137th Annual Meeting last month at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. Eight members of the staff received the prestigious Orison S. Marden Awards for outstanding service and dedication.

Members of the Board of Directors elected for the term ending 2016 included William F. Cavanaugh, Jr., Co-Chair of Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP; Douglas F. Curtis, a Vice Chair and a Partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP; Richard J. Davis, Chairman of the Board and a lawyer in private practice; Marcy Engel, Chief Operating Officer and General Counsel of Eton Park Capital Management; Blaine (Fin) Fogg, President and of Counsel at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP; Mark P. The following persons were re-elected to the Board of Advisors: Elkan Abramowitz, former Chairman of the Board of the Advisors, a former Director of the Society, and a principal at Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Iason & Anello P.C.; Christopher P. Bogart, a former Director and the Managing Director of Glenavy Capital LLC; Michael Helfer, a former Director and General Counsel and Corporate Secretary at Citigroup Inc.; Steven G. Horowitz, a former Director and a Partner at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton LLP; Marti Kopacz, Managing Principal for Brant Point Advisors LLC; Steven B. Rosenfeld, a former President, a retired partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, and a volunteer in the Society's Juvenile Rights Practice; Frederick Schaffer, a former President and Senior Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and General Council of the City University of New York; Jonathan D. The Orison S. Marden Awards which recognize outstanding service and dedication were presented to: Javier Chuck, a Paralegal Casehandler in the Harlem Community Law Office; LaSalle Jones, a Paralegal in the Bronx Criminal Office who also works on the barge at Rikers Island; Stephen Pokart, a Staff Attorney in the Manhattan Criminal Office; Azalia Torres, a Staff Attorney in the Brooklyn Criminal Office; Stephen Myers, a Supervising Attorney in the Brooklyn Neighborhood Office; Sheree Lukowicz, Manager of Billing and Budget Operations in the Finance Department; and Patricia Bath, Director of Communications. A posthumous award was presented to the family of Steven Sindos, a Staff Attorney in the Brooklyn Criminal Office, who died at Brooklyn Hospital after suffering cardiac arrest in court.

Celebratring 45 years of service was Victor S. Castelli.
