Detention: Risks and Alternatives

Tamara Steckler, Attorney-in-Charge of the Juvenile Rights Practice, participated in the annual Juvenile Justice Center's Children on Trial Conference sponsored by Suffolk University Law School and Flaschner Judicial Institute and Committee for Public Counsel Service yesterday in Boston.

Ms. Steckler served on a panel on Detention: Risks and Alternatives which addressed strategies for mitigating confinement, the Juvenile Detention Alternative Initiative, dangers of detention and the work being done to decrease the number of youth detained pre-trial and discussed the Society's successful lawsuit on the shackling of children and the pending litigation on the conditions of confinement and lack of mental health services in detention facilities.
