Steven Banks congratulates Isabella Lacayo, who was part of the Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP legal team working on the Advantage case.

Daniel F. Kolb, senior partner at Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP and a vice chair of The Legal Aid Society, and the law firm of Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP were recipients of the New York State Bar Association's 2012 President's Pro Bono Service Awards for work they had accomplished with The Legal Aid Society.

Mr. Kolb was honored as the driving force behind his firm’s pro bono efforts, including Davis Polk’s joint work with The Legal Aid Society aimed at ensuring that New Yorkers accused of crimes, often wrongfully, receive high quality comprehensive representation by lawyers with appropriate caseloads.

Weil, Gotshal & Manges served as co-counsel with The Legal Aid Society to prevent New York City from terminating Advantage rent subsidies for 16,000 formerly homeless households. Working with Steve Banks, the Society's Attorney-in-Chief, and the Society's Homeless Rights Project, the Weil Advantage team’s advocacy made it possible for the Advantage tenants to receive subsidies from April 2011 through January 2012 -- totaling more than $115 million -- and thereby avert evictions and repeat homelessness during that period.
