At its mid-year meeting, the New York State Bar Association's Criminal Justice Section is giving Legal Aid Staff Attorney Jessica Goldthwaite the Michele S. Maxian Outstanding Public Defense Practitioner Award. Ms. Goldthwaite is a Staff Attorney in The Legal Aid Society's Criminal Practice DNA Unit, which is challenging the City Medical Examiner's methods for discerning DNA profiles in complex DNA mixture cases.

Prior to her work in the DNA Unit, Ms. Goldthwaite was a Staff Attorney in the Society's Brooklyn Criminal Defense office. The Outstanding Criminal Defense Practitioner Award is named for long-time Legal Aid Society Criminal Defense Attorney Michele S. Maxian, who led the Society's litigation that established the 24-hour arrest-to-arraignment standard and many other successful law reform efforts before her death from cancer.
