Prisoner Medical Care

PRP has brought and settled class actions concerning general medical care in the state’s maximum security prison for women and a men’s maximum security prison, and a statewide challenge to inadequate treatment for prisoners with HIV. It has done the same with respect to medical care and living conditions at the Rikers Island Infirmary and the City hospital prison wards, including forcing the construction of a state-of-the-art Communicable Disease Unit on Rikers Island to control the spread of drug-resistant tuberculosis and other infectious diseases. PRP responds to large numbers of individual complaints about medical and mental health care from prisoners in the City jails, requesting intervention from the Department of Health, which contracts with the private vendor Prison Health Services, Inc., to provide jail medical services.
