The Legal Aid Society's Immigration Law Unit has set up a Haitian TPS Hotline to reach and assist as many Haitian nationals as possible who are eligible to file for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The Legal Aid Society has been identified by New York City as one of the key organizations to assist eligible Haitian immigrants in receiving TPS.
The Hotline will be operated Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Callers will be given information on basic eligibility and the filing of TPS applications.
Callers who need application assistance will be referred to The Legal Aid Society's various community outreach sites that have been created to assist Haitians in completing applications for TPS.
Callers will receive information on how pending immigration applications may be expedited.
Callers will be advised how to file petitions for immediate relatives still in Haiti. Following the January 12th devastating earthquake in Haiti, the Obama Administration designated Haitians for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Under this program, eligible Haitian nationals will have approximately 180 days, until July 20, 2010, to apply for TPS. TPS is available to Haitian nationals who were present in the United States as of January 12, 2010, and are continuously residing in the United States. The status is valid initially for 18 months and will allow eligible Haitians an opportunity to obtain work authorization.
The Society is seeking volunteers from the legal community to staff the Hotline and to assist in the preparation of TPS applications. Please contact Katie Niejadlik at /kaniejadlik@legal-aid.org to volunteer.
Like all New Yorkers, our hearts go out to all those who are suffering in Haiti and in our communities.
