Special Education

Introduction

All children require assistance and support in order to succeed in school. The New York City public school system's special education program is required to provide customized instruction catering to the particular needs of students with disabilities.

A federal law called the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is designed to ensure that all children with disabilities are provided with free and appropriate public education through special education programs and services. The IDEA and New York State and City education law combine to offer a variety of special education services and programs designed to meet a child's unique needs. Your child may have a right to these services.

These links discuss the wide variety of services that students can access via special education, and explain how to request special education for your child.
