What is an English Language Learner (ELL)?


If your child has been enrolled in an English language school system for less than 2 years:

If your child is an English Language Learner (ELL), but has been enrolled in an English language school system for less than 2 years, then your child is exempt from promotion standards.

If your child has been enrolled in an English language school system for more than 2 years:

Your child's promotion will be determined based upon a 'comprehensive assessment' based upon the following factors:

  • Credits: Whether your child has obtained at least 28 credits (if your child began the 9th grade before the 2004-2005 school year) or 30 credits (if your child began the 9th grade in or after the 2004-2005 school year) towards the 44 required for graduation from High School, including:
  • Academic Standards: Whether your child has met the standards in academic subject areas.
  • Attendance: Whether your child has attained 90% attendance.
