Promotion from Grades 3, 5 and 7

Promotion from grades 3, 5 and 7 will be based on the following :

  • Students must achieve or exceed Proficiency Level 2 on the English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics assessments. In addition, for promotion from 7th grade, where a principal determines, based upon student work, teacher observations, and grades in academic courses, that
  • If a child does not achieve Proficiency Level 2 or above, the teacher must prepare a portfolio of writing samples, classwork, homework, teacher observations, reading level from classroom libraries and other relevant information regarding the student’s performance. This portfolio will then be reviewed by the teacher and the principal. If the principal and the teacher agree that the portfolio demonstrates that the student’s performance is equivalent to a high Proficiency Level 2, the student will be recommended for promotion. The principal will forward the recommendation for promotion or retention and send documentation to the community superintendent who will make the final determination.
  • Students who are not promoted in June can re-take the ELA and Math assessments in August during summer school. Students who achieve Proficiency Level 2 in August will be promoted in September. The same portfolio review process described above is done for students who do not achieve the necessary scores in August.
  • A parent may appeal a promotion decision for grades 3, 5 and 7 by writing a letter to the principal. A decision on the appeal will be made after the student has the opportunity to re-take the citywide ELA and/or Mathematics exam in August.
