Promotion from Grade 8

Promotion from grade 8 to grade 9 will be based on the following:

  • Students must attain 90% attendance.
  • Students must score a Proficiency Level 2 or above on the English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics assessments;
  • Students must attain passing grades in English, Math, Science, and Social Studies courses;
  • If the student does not attain passing grades in English, Mathematics, Science, or Social Studies, the student is encouraged to take the course in summer school and will be promoted if he or she passes the course;
  • If the student does not achieve Proficiency Level 2 or above on state standardized ELA and/or Math assessment tests, the teacher must prepare and submit to the principal a standardized promotion portfolio. The portfolio will document the performance in the subject areas in which the student did not meet promotion standards. This portfolio will then be reviewed by the teacher and the principal. If the principal and the teacher agree that the portfolio demonstrates that the student’s performance is equivalent to a high Proficiency Level 2, the student will be recommended for promotion. The principal then forwards the recommendation for promotion or retention and sends documentation to the community superintendent who will make the final determination;
  • Students who are not promoted in June can re-take the ELA and Math assessments in August during summer school. Students who achieve Proficiency Level 2 in August will be promoted in September. The same portfolio review process described above is done for students who do not achieve the necessary scores in August.
  • Students who are over age or who have previously been retained in middle school may be promoted on appeal in August if they demonstrate effort towards meeting promotion standards.
