On the occasion of The Legal Aid Society's 75th anniversary celebration on February 16, 1951, The Honorable Learned Hand, Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, served as the keynote speaker. In his remarks, Judge Hand delivered a statement that has become a hallmark in the quest for equal justice: "If we are to keep our democracy, there must be one commandment: Thou shalt not ration justice."
