Did you know…

Government benefits help alleviate poverty among the poorest segment of the population. Approximately 66% of Legal Aid’s clients have annual household incomes of $10,000 or less, and another 17% have less than $15,000.

Case Example

Ms. T was a 24-year-old single mother of two when she approached the Society for help. An immigrant survivor of domestic violence, she had escaped a life-threatening situation only to be faced with hunger and poverty after her public assistance application was denied. The Society helped her obtain the benefits to which she was entitled, and, at the same time, Ms. T obtained approval to participate in an education and training program in place of a work assignment. When Ms. T’s benefits were later reduced without notification, the Society successfully advocated for her to retain her benefits while remaining in the education program. Ms. T is currently enrolled in training to become a home health care aide.
