Major Purpose of Position

There is a full-time permanent opening in the Bronx County Criminal Defense Practice (CP) office for a MICA Mitigation Specialist with the office’s MICA Project.

The MICA Project is a federally-funded project which provides enhanced social work and legal services to CDD clients with co-occurring mental illness and chemical addiction (MICA). Each borough is staffed with a MICA Project team consisting of a social worker and an attorney. The team, assisted by a liaison who works both on Rikers Island and in the community, handles a specialized caseload of MICA clients, seeking to divert them from incarceration to community-based services. Team members monitor clients’ progress in treatment, and provide transitional social work case management services when clients are discharged from treatment, until appropriate community-based support is established. Clients generally receive social work services from the Project for up to 18-24 months.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide case management (assessment, treatment planning, referral) and in-court advocacy
  • Conduct informational and training seminars
  • Establish and participate in collaborative alliances with various institutional, community and governmental entities
  • Coordinate and supervise the work of social work interns
  • Provide transitional and crisis counseling to Project clients
  • Report monthly statistics on the borough’s service provision.
  • Responsible for maintaining paper and computerized records about clients’ progress, some of which will be used to prepare reports for the funding agency.
  • Must be available after hours to respond to clients’ needs.

Training And Qualifications

  • Candidates must have an LMSW or LCSW
  • Excellent writing and organizational skills
  • Strong interest in working with clients with mental illness and chemical addiction and their families.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team
  • Ability to develop new approaches to representing clients with mental illness
  • Comfortable working with a challenging client population.
  • Spanish language facility is preferred.
