Major Purpose of Position

As a result of an expansion of a private city-wide grant, the Bronx Neighborhood Office has an opening for a Paralegal II Casehandler position to provide legal assistance in the areas of SSI and Social Security Disability benefits. Duties will include working with an attorney who will work with pro bono attorneys and initiatives in the SSI and SSD area. Although the positions will be located in the Bronx Neighborhood Office, the paralegals may be required to intake disabled clients in other boroughs. The office handles a wide range of civil legal issues affecting low-income families and individuals, including housing, government benefits, family/domestic violence as well as disability.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provide direct assistance to clients in disability benefits area
  • Interviewing and assessing client requests for services
  • Represent clients at administrative hearings
  • Advocate with various agencies regarding government benefits
  • Policy advocacy on behalf of clients
  • These positions may require off-site work and evening hours

Secondary Duties/Responsibilities

  • Other duties as assigned

Training And Qualifications

  • Paralegal certificate from an accredited school, Bachelor’s degree in relevant field or satisfactory completion of a comprehensive in-house training course appropriate to practice area
  • Experience in and/or commitment to advocacy on behalf of low-income people is strongly desired
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of mentally and physically impaired clients is required
  • Experience assisting people in crisis is desirable
  • Strong writing, verbal, organization, and computer skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is desirable, but not required
