Discussion of factors to take into account, including licenses and permits; developing relationships with professionals (lawyer; accountant; insurance broker); choosing the best legal form for the small business, with an analysis of formation costs, liability issues, tax considerations and flexibility in governance. Employment issues for small businesses and nonprofit organizations. April 17, 2007 (tentative date) 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The laws governing employment are complex and the failure to properly apply them can result in a lawsuit or fine sand penalties. This workshop provides an overview of the fundamental issues including: the hiring process; the importance of employee handbooks; the proper classification of employees and independent contractors; and the basics of wage and hour issues. Essentials of Not-for-Profit Incorporation and Tax Exemption June 12, 2007 (tentative date) 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Find out if your organization is ready to incorporate and apply for federal tax exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. This workshop will cover the types of other- than-for -profit corporations, drafting and filing the certificate of incorporation, completing the application for 501(c)(3) status, and other registration and filing requirements.
